Uganda Day Symposium Underscores Urgency of Addressing Non-Tariff Barriers to Boost Regional Trade

The Uganda Day Symposium at the ongoing 25th EAC MSME Trade Fair underscored the urgent need for strengthened intra-EAC trade and renewed commitment to eliminating Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) that continue to impede the growth and competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the region. Delegates noted that intra-EAC trade currently stands at approximately 20%, considerably lower than the 46% recorded in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and 65% in the European Union, signalling the need for accelerated regional integration efforts.

The Ministry aligned itself with the remarks of the Chief Guest, Hon. Gen. Wilson Mbadi Mbasu, Minister of State for Trade of the Republic of Uganda, who reiterated the importance of the free movement of goods, people, labour, and technology as foundational principles enshrined in the EAC Treaty and essential for deepening regional cooperation.

H.E. Veronica Nduva, Secretary General of the East African Community, outlined ongoing plans by the EAC Secretariat, in collaboration with Partner State Governments, to establish a cross-border payment protocol aimed at facilitating seamless financial transactions within the region and expanding opportunities for MSME participation in regional trade.

Ms. Regina Ombam, Principal Secretary, State Department for Trade, emphasised that MSMEs remain the engines of economic growth across the East African region and called for harmonised, multi-sectoral efforts to enhance their competitiveness and resilience.

The Ministry extended its appreciation to the MSMEs from the Republic of Uganda for their outstanding showcase of diverse products, entrepreneurial talent, and commitment to advancing a unified and progressive East African trade ecosystem.
