International MSME Day

The state department of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMEs) will on 27 June 2024 lead the country in celebrating International MSME Day. 

This year the MSME Day will focus on building resilience amidst multiple crises and accelerating sustainable development to eradicate poverty.

MSMEs constitute the backbone of economies worldwide, contributing significantly to employment and economic growth. Despite their importance, MSMEs face numerous challenges including limited access to finance, markets, and technology. International MSME Day serves as a platform to highlight these issues and advocate for policies that support their growth and sustainability.

This year’s celebrations, hosted in Kisumu County, Kenya, under the theme "Building Resilience of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to Accelerate Sustainable Development and Eradicate Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises," will emphasize the role of MSMEs in driving sustainable practices and climate-smart initiatives. A key focus will be on tree planting and afforestation projects, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and protect biodiversity through the 15 billion tree initiative by 2032.

The event will showcase innovative business models and best practices adopted by MSMEs in the forestry and tree-growing sectors. It aims to promote policies, financing mechanisms, and capacity-building programs that empower MSMEs to integrate environmental sustainability into their operations. Furthermore, fostering partnerships between MSMEs, large enterprises, governments, and other stakeholders will be pivotal in scaling up tree-growing initiatives nationwide.

Organized by the Ministry of Co-operatives and MSMEs Development in collaboration with various stakeholders including government agencies, county governments, business organizations, development partners, financial institutions, and media. The celebrations are expected to galvanize support for MSMEs in embracing the green economy.

The day seeks to inspire and empower MSME owners and operators to champion environmental sustainability while driving economic prosperity. By harnessing the resilience and innovation of MSMEs, the celebrations aim to propel inclusive growth and build a more sustainable future for all.
