Consultative Meeting on the Implementation of 2024 MSME Survey
Today, the MSME Development Ps engaged a technical team from The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) led by principal Secretary for Economic Planning Hon. James Muhati for a consultative meeting on the implementation of 2024 MSME survey.
The 2024 MSMEs survey follows previous survey that was conducted lastly 2016 and is set to capture the evolving nature and variety of MSME sector by enterprises activity, geography, gender distribution and skills with the sector. The data and information from the survey will measure the contribution of the MSME sector and its subcomponents to GDP, its contribution to employment, and the size and magnitude of MSME both in the formal and informal sector, and will target all non primary activities and Agribusiness.

Ps Susan Mang’eni emphasized the importance of aligning the survey with the government's broader development agenda of Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda through key priority value chains in the agricultural sector like rice, edible oils, tea, textile and livestock.
To address challenges faced by Micro, Small and Medium enterprises in Kenya that impede their growth and development, the State Department for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development was established through Executive Order No. 1 of 2023 to foster economic growth and inclusivity.
The Ps highlighted the need to capture data on the challenges faced by MSMEs, registration status, demand of credit, the source of start up capital and other financial and non- financial support and the education profile and training needs of the owner that will inform the need for capacity building for entrepreneurs.

On his side, Ps Muhati reaffirmed his support in ensuring that the process will be smooth and will offer constructive data that will inform policy and guide the MSME sector in the country.
The MSME sector is a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy for it plays a crucial role of creating jobs, generating wealth, driving innovation, and contributing to revenue generation which is vital in unlocking the potential of the country’s young population.
